I have a neighbor down the block who offers to buy my pickup off of me every four months or so. He goes on about how he had the same one same color for 17 years and regrets selling it every time he sees mine. I decline and we chat for it a bit, is the typical result.
For me, that pickup is not for sale for any reasonable price. Sure I could take his or someone else’s money and got twice what I paid for it maybe, but it took me almost two years to find that particular pickup. Also its ultity and sentimental value will not be challenged with cash. Any no one is going to offer a ridiculous amount for that thing, so that hypothetical is moot. Remember, when I had to choose between the Tercel and the pickup, the Tercel lost.
But what if we got a decent offer for the Vibe? If it was comparable to what we paid for it and we had a different family vehicle in mind, it would be a heavily entertained idea. But everything would have to be aligned for that.
I love cars, I love looking at cars, I love driving new (to me) cars. But actually shopping for cars is a royal pain. So mere profits per vehicle are never going to be enough incentive for me. However, my brother in law is the opposite. He loves buying cars and will take a decent profit if the opportunity presents itself. I also have friends who burn through cars pretty quickly, and will salvage any money they can on sale or trade in to get into their next car.
What about you folk? Consider the hypothetical that you get a cash offer from an admirer for your car. What would it take to pique your interest?

For me it would take enough money for me to buy another with lower miles

Because we spent a good sum of money on it new and now it’s worth about 5¢ and a used tea bag, I am not willing to sell my ML unless someone offers me $60k. Which is impossible.
But in all honesty, even if someone DID offer that, I’d probably hold on to it. Because sentimental value.

My Caprice would have to be a crazy offer, 10k + even though I only payed 1200 for it. I love it and plan on keeping it for as long as possible. My Charger I want to get rid of so I would be delighted if I got an offer, and I bought it at half of blue book so I would be fine. My Jeep I recently picked up and have only driven once could be sold for a small profit.

Yes and no. It’s a rare car, so there’s always the (very, very, very slight) chance that someone would rather pay the premium than try hunting down one of the other ~850 examples in North America.

I’m still reluctant to take the money I keep getting offered for a car I don’t want to sell. $5k for a car I paid $3k for seems like a great deal, but where will I get another RWD cruiser with a V8 with so many goodies, in flawless mechanical condition, with such low mileage, and that is so comfortable.
Now, if they at least tripled my money... I mean, it takes a lot of time and effort to find a winner among the tens of thousands of pieces of shit on CL.

$16k. I bought the GTO for $13,000 at 48K miles. I have no interest in selling it even thought it’s +15k miles now. So really it has to be something kind of ridiculous. I would, but it would have to be enough to get something else I really want.

Cash isn’t the only thing. I don’t want to sell my car then a couple of years later find it with a tacky body kit and stickers, on a forklift being taken into a scrapyard. I want the assurance that the buyer will take good care of it like I have. Yes, I know it’s “just an Accord,” but for shits sake, I love it.

Hmmm, probably $3,000 and I’d probably part with the Amanti. I love it, but I love cocaine and college girls more...err ummm...mutual funds! That’s the word I’m looking for. *shifty eyes*

I have a yuge attachment to both my WJ Grand Cherokee as well as my basket case ‘85 4Runner. I wouldn't be willing to accept any amount of money a real person would be willing to pay.

I think I’m stuck with my car until it dies. People who know cars wouldn’t dare take it and people too stupid to know that a 245k mile BMW is a bad idea probably can’t drive stick.

I’ve actually thought about this with two of my Preludes. If someone offered me a running, decently sorted manual 986 for my 5th gen, I’d do it. It would take a low mileage DD (Civic, 1st gen 3) to pry my 3rd gen away from me.

I had an offer waaay back in the 90s for my cherry ‘91 CRX Si, around what I paid. But I needed the car to get to U MD to (finally) finish my degree. I sold the car with 11K on it for a few hundred bucks less than I paid. Wish I still had it.

Good reasonable offer. I typically change cars every 18 months. I semi-promised my wife that I would keep my current vehicles, the Cougar as a family cruise/car show vehicle once it’s done, and the Taco will be handed down to my son in 9 years. With as little as I drive, it’ll be a 10 year old truck with about 60k on it at that time.
I haven’t had an “attachment” with any vehicle I’ve owned. The more I can experience, the better. The hunting is part of the fun.

If they want to pay what I owe, they can have it today. I have no emotional attachment to my car whatsoever. (15 Civic)

10,000$ It’s so pointlessly high for a 85k-mile ‘02 Miata w/hardtop that no one will bother paying for it because I don’t want to sell it. I put too much time, effort, pain, and joy into it to let it be easily sold; I’ll drive it into the ground or my grave, whichever comes first.

When I was studying in Heidelberg I had a vintage 50cc scooter. I won’t bore you with the details about what it is and why it has a cult following. A neighbour kept asking when I would sell it to him. One night it was stolen by what I presume some drunk teens, who tried to jump start it (idiots!!!) and when that failed vandalized it and left it in a field. 5-0 found it, drove me there (I got to ride shotgun in a police cruiser!!!) I pushed it back home on flat tires in a drizzle, put the tarp back on and never really looked at it again. I was close to graduating, working on my thesis and didn’t have the time to repair it. Plus, every time I slightly lifted the tarp I just felt anger rising inside me. So when he asked me again, I told him about the theft, showed him what’s what and sold it to him for a measly €50. I knew that he would fully restore it, so I was fine with basically giving it away.

I’d have to at least get what it cost me to put it together the way it is now, plus some extra for the time it would take to build another. So like $9-10K maybe? That’s kind of a lot for what it is, though.

A chunk more than I paid for it. I care for it well so replacing it with one equally well looked after without spending any profit would be challenging.

It’s worth barely 1500 and nobody would buy it. I’m driving it until it says no more.

If approached, I’ll tell them I’m not really interested in selling them. If pushed (because “every man has his price) the Niva has a price tag of $1ok to $20,000, depending on how much of a douchenozzle they are. The MJ has a starting print of $25k, and even then I’d miss it. Generally that’s enough to make them walk away and it’ll let me put another much better example together. If they counter that initial price, I get offended, and the price goes up $5k. If anyone has that much money laying around and they’re foolish enough to throw it away on my junk, I have no qualms taking it from them. However when they read the bill of sale they’ll discover that it’s only a one-year lease with no buy-out option and they won’t ever receive the title and there will be a $100,000 penalty applied if the vehicle is damaged or modified (same thing) in any way upon it’s return, or if they go over the 3,000km limit.
If they sign that, like I said, I have absolutely no qualms taking their money.

My 98 sentra that’s a pos with many issues, 230k miles, and brand new tires and brakes; $2000. It’s probably definitely more than it’s worth, but that’s what it’d take.
My 85 alfa gtv6, it’s worth nothing, in terrible shape, and a project. I’d sell for $15,000. Again, wayyyyyy more than it’s actually worth (a clean one with 150k miles goes for $12000 in my area), but it’s special to me.

It’s kind of annoying when someone asks if you’ll sell them your ride (repeatedly). This happens a lot to me with my motorbike. It’s not an expensive bike. I’ve put some mods into it, but other than that...it’s really a bike anyone with initiative could go buy from someone else who actively is trying to sell.
Maybe I’m the one who’s rude, but it is irritating to me because it’s always when I’m on my way somewhere (and I rarely leave early enough to have a chat) or I’m working on it (in a small timeframe). I try to be friendly, but on the inside, I’m really not feeling amicable about it.
So basically, even if I wanted to sell it, it puts me off a bit. So I say, never sell to him. I also live in Brooklyn, so I’m a bit paranoid when people ‘notice’ my shit.

the junk that i have is not for sale, ANY price........ somehow putting a price on the work that your friends have helped you out with seems like a slap in the face, as if to say “your help means so little to me”. it also feels like you are selling an old friend down the river. taken me all over the place, and this...... is...... IT, especially true for my honest old trucks.

Of course if you’ve got your oppo sled you’ve always wanted then you wouldn’t give it up.

On the one hand, the vehicle I want doesn’t exist and I have the closest thing to it.
On the other hand, give me double the value of the next best thing and I’d consider it.

If some fool offered me $15k for my truck, I’d be tempted, but it would still be hard. My Roadmaster would be much easier to part with. If somebody waved $3k in front of my face, they’d almost certainly be driving it home.

If the price is right, everything is for sale.
